Murderer

The Resume

    (July 23, 1942-November 15, 2002)
    Known as the 'Moors Murderess'
From July 1963 to October 1965, she and her lover, Ian Brady, abducted, tortured, and murdered five small children and adolescents around the Manchester area and buried their bodies on Saddleworth Moor
Convicted in May 1966 for the murders of 10-year-old Lesley Ann Downey and 17-year-old Edward Evans, and for being an accessory in the murder of 12-year-old John Kilbride
    Sentenced to life in prison
In 1987, she confessed to the murders of 16-year-old Pauline Reade and 12-year-old Keith Bennett
Died in prison (November 15, 2002)

Why she might be annoying:

Her modus operandi was to get children and young people to trust her and then lure them into her car so she could drive them to Saddleworth Moor, or back to her home in Manchester, where she and her psychopathic boyfriend, Ian Brady, would torture, rape, and murder them.
The crimes that Brady wanted to commit would not have been possible without her help and cooperation since he did not have a driver's license.
When she was finally arrested and questioned by the police, she was uncooperative and refused to answer any questions and denied any knowledge of the murders or the victims' burial sites on the moors.
During her trial, her manner was hard and arrogant and she was often seen whispering, laughing, and passing notes with Brady as gruesome evidence of the murders was being presented.
She and Brady took pornographic photographs of their victims and each other, and made a tape-recording of the torture of Lesley Ann Downey, on which Hindley can be heard telling the child to 'Shut up!' and 'Stop crying now or I will forget myself and hit you one!'
For the first twenty-one years of her imprisonment, she insisted that she was totally innocent of the crimes attributed to her and put all of the blame on Brady and her brother-in-law, David Smith, who had turned them in to the police and testified against them in court.
She claimed that Brady had blackmailed and threatened her in order to get her to participate in the murders.
During her imprisonment, she applied for parole many times and each time was turned down by the Home Secretary's Office.
She had numerous lesbian affairs while in prison. In 1974, she made an unsuccessful attempt to escape with the help of a lesbian warder whom she was involved with at the time.
For many years she convinced her family and fellow inmates, as well as most of the prison staff, of her innocence.
She did not make a full confession of her crimes until 1987, after Brady indicated to the police that they had committed more murders in addition to the ones they had already been convicted of.
In the British newspapers, she was depicted as the personification of evil.
Her notorious mug shot was endlessly reprinted in the British media. It was even used as the basis for an art work by the British artist, Marcus Harvey. When the work was shown at the 2000 'Sensation' show in London, it was pelted with eggs and ink and eventually had to be cleaned up and placed behind protective glass.
Families of her victims claimed that if she was ever released from prison they would kill her.
She became the longest serving woman prisoner in modern British criminal history.
She basically wasted her life deceiving, manipulating, and destroying all those around her.
Morrissey wrote 'Suffer Little Children' about her murder spree.

Why she might not be annoying:

She eventually confessed her crimes and helped police locate the body of Pauline Reade twenty-four years after the murder took place.
She earned an Open University degree in Sociology.
She was musically gifted and had a pleasant singing voice. In the 1970s, she submitted three songs she had composed and recorded to a prison music competition and finished first place out of over 100 entries which were all kept anonymous to ensure the judges' impartiality.
She was described by many who knew her in prison as charming, highly intelligent, well-read, good-humored, and smartly dressed.
    She loved animals.
When she was growing up, her father was physically abusive towards both her and her mother.
Some believe that the intense public hatred toward her was simply due to the fact that she was a woman who had harmed children. Her defenders also argue that she had genuinely reformed in prison and should have been released.
She seemed very tough and resilient in light of the fact that she was the most hated woman in Britain.
She is dead and no one needs to think about her anymore.
The band Crass made a song about her.
