The Resume

    (March 26, 1873-September 19, 1942)
Born in New York City, New York
Founded Condé Nast Publications (1915- )
Bought or founded 'Vogue,' 'Vanity Fair,' 'House and Garden' and 'Glamour'

Why he might be annoying:

Most of his magazines (then as now) focused on fashion, decorating and chitchat about the rich and famous.
He blatantly used snob appeal to increase circulation.
He was 35 years older than his second wife.
He went bankrupt in the stock market crash of 1929.
He turned down a chance to buy 'Life Magazine,' which became an international success.

Why he might not be annoying:

His grandfather, William Nast, founded the first German Methodist church in the US.
He was the first publisher to target readers by income and interests.
He published some of the best writers of his time, including Dorothy Parker, Robert Benchley and Thomas Wolfe.
For better or worse, his models introduced the gaunt, high cheekboned look that defines high fashion to this day.
'Vanity Fair' returned to the newsstands in 1984 after a hiatus of 48 years.
