The Resume

    (April 25, 1287-November 29, 1330)
Born in Wigmore Castle, Herefordshire, England, United Kingdom
3rd Baron Mortimer and 1st Earl of March
    Lord Lieutenant of Ireland (1316-18)
Led opposition to King Edward II in the Despenser War (1321-22)
Led an invasion of England and forced Edward II to abdicate (1326-27)
De facto ruler of England for three years (1327-30)
Ordered executed for assuming royal power and other crimes by King Edward III

Why he might be annoying:

He initially became powerful by marrying an heiress with huge tracts of land.
His initial revolt against Edward II was unsuccessful.
While in exile in France, he began an affair with Edward's consort, <13311>Queen Isabella<13311>, who was ostensibly in the country on a peace mission.
He and Isabella led an invasion of England, overthrew Edward II and ruled as regents for the underage Edward III.
When Edward II failed to die in prison from neglect, he and Isabella allegedly had Edward murdered via a red-hot poker up the rectum.
His ambition and abuse of power as regent prompted other nobles to conspire against him.
The nobles eventually convinced Edward III to asser his independence by arresting Mortimer.
After his execution, his body was left hanging from the gallows for two days and nights.

Why he might not be annoying:

He began his revolt after Edward II gave some of his lands to Hugh Despenser, a royal favorite.
After his defeat in the Despenser War, he escaped from the Tower of London.
Queen Isabella tried to save him from the gallows, asking Edward III, 'Fair son, have pity on the gentle Mortimer.'
He was an ancestor of the British monarchs from Edward IV to Richard III and from Henry VIII onward.
