    Painted 'America Today' (1930), 'Indiana Murals' (1933), 'Social History of Missouri' (1935), 'The Year of Peril' (1942), 'Lincoln' (1953), 'Independence and the Opening of the West' (1961), 'Turn of the Century, Joplin' (1972) and 'The Sources of Country Music' (1975)
    Wrote the autobiography 'An Artist in America' (1937)

    His mother financially supported him until he was 33.
    His sister said, 'Tom made a lot more enemies than friends. He was rude to people.'
    His 'Indiana Murals' controversially include KKK members in full regalia.
    He complained about the influence of 'precious fairies' on the art world, calling the typical museum 'a graveyard run by a pretty boy with delicate wrists and a swing in his gait.'

    He was married to Rita Piacenza for 53 years until his death.
    His autobiography was praised by Sinclair Lewis, who said 'Here's a rare thing, a painter who can write.'
