The Resume

    (June 1718-November 1779)
Born in Otley, England, United Kingdom
English cabinet maker and furniture designer
Published his designs in 'The Gentleman and Cabinet Maker's Directory' (1754)

Why he might be annoying:

He doubled as an undertaker for some clients.
His style was widely copied, making it difficult to tell if a 'Chippendale' piece is authentic.
His name was applied to several styles ('Gothic Chippendale,' 'Irish Chippendale,' 'Chinese Chippendale'), some of which do not much resemble his original designs.
Nowadays, 'Chippendale' conjures up images of male strippers as much as furniture.

Why he might not be annoying:

He outlived eight of his twelve children.
He not only designed furniture, but served as an interior decorator, designing and providing wallpaper, carpets and mirrors.
He was the first non-monarch to have a furniture style named after him.
His furniture was considered the epitome of elegance, which is one reason the promoters of the Chippendale dancers borrowed the name: to lend the affair an air of class.
