Why he might be annoying:

He describes himself as a former 'dilettante of heroin.'
He is fond of wearing t-shirts printed with the cover of his latest book as a design.
His spiked hair has been described as resembling 'strained apricots' or 'a rusty Brillo pad.'
Critic Russell Banks said of his pose as the bad boy of contemporary literature, 'It will be interesting to watch him in the coming years, because it's a hard persona to project when you're 65 and bald.'

Why he might not be annoying:

Asked about possibly toning down his wardrobe, he replied, 'Why does everybody who does literature have to have a pipe and a tweed jacket?'
His absurdist satirical style has been compared to William Faulkner and Evelyn Waugh.
He said of his high-energy book readings, 'I'm out there as a missionary for literature, because if people laugh and enjoy themselves, they might actually do something as bizarre as reading the books.'
