The Resume

    (June 20, 1912-November 10, 1969)
    Born in Oak Grove, Louisiana
    Shot putter and football player
Held the world record for the shot put (1934-48)
Tackle for the Chicago Bears (1939-40)
Inducted into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame (1961) and the National Track and Field Hall of Fame (2015)

Why he might be annoying:

He shares a name with the main character in Stephen King’s ‘The Shining.’
Searching Google Images for his picture gets a ton of hits of Jack Nicholson from the film of ‘The Shining,’ even if you include ‘shot put’ in your search terms.
He was out of shape for the 1936 Berlin Olympics and finished out of the medals in a disappointing 5th.
He launched a boxing career that got off to a quick start with four knockout wins.
Then his manager was fined and suspended for fixing the fights (1937) and he never won another match.

Why he might not be annoying:

During his senior year at Louisiana State University, he was captain of both the football and basketball teams.
During a thirteen-month stretch (July, 1933-August, 1934), he added four feet to the world shot put record. (The record had improved by less than three feet over the previous 25 years.)
An investigation found he was not involved in his manager’s fight fixing.
His wife and daughter were killed in a car crash (1959).
