    She served four months in jail for inciting a riot (1969).
    She was suspended from Parliament when she punched Home Secretary Reginald Maulding and accused him of lying about the 'Bloody Sunday' shootings (1972).
    She lost much support among Northern Ireland's Catholics after she had a child out of wedlock (1971).
    She was deported from the U.S., with the State Department saying she 'poses a serious threat to the security of the United States.' (2003)
    Protestant leader Ian Paisley called her 'Fidel Castro in a miniskirt.'

    At 21, she was the youngest female MP.
    Her maiden speech in Parliament was described by opponents as 'brilliant' and 'electrifying.'
    She and her husband were shot in their home by Protestant gunmen (January 16, 1981).
    She founded a charity to help migrant workers (1997).
