Why he might be annoying:

    He directed ads for Benson & Hedges cigarettes.
    He directed a campaign bio for Labour Party leader Neil Kinnock.
    He first met his future wife, actress Maryam d'Abo, when he turned her down for the part of Jane in 'Greystoke.'
    He was nominated for a Golden Raspberry Award as worst director for 'Revolution.'

Why he might not be annoying:

    He twice won the top prize at the Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival, for ads for Levi's (1972) and Coty (1978).
    The first feature film he directed, 'Chariots of Fire,' won the Academy Award for Best Picture.
    He noted about 'Chariots,' 'It has a durability about it which is kind of unusual. It doesn't date. There are very few films that can do that.'
