He sustained multiple concussions during his career.
He was nicknamed 'The Titanium Catcher,' due to the perception he was always going to be hit by a tipped baseball.
On top of the concussions, he was extremely injury prone.
He became an inconsistent hitter following his Silver Slugger Award winning season.
He played on six different teams during his career, including four different teams in his last five seasons.

He is the son of former Tigers general manager Al Avila.
He is the 10th catcher in the history of the Tigers franchise to win a Silver Slugger Award.
He was a member of the Tigers team that reached the World Series (2012).
He chose to leave the Tigers as a free agent when his father became the team's general manager, in order not to give off the impression he was on the roster through nepotism.
When he was healthy, he was considered a durable player by baseball pundits.
