Why he might be annoying:

    He was born into wealth and the nobility.
    He briefly flirted with Fascism, then joined the Communist party.
    The costume designer for his films said, 'He was incredibly demanding to point of arrogant.'
    Actress Clara Calamai called him 'a medieval lord with a whip.'
    He smoked up to 120 cigarettes a day.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He was imprisoned by the Gestapo for his involvement with the Italian resistance.
    He staged several successful operas starring Maria Callas.
    A critic wrote, 'People like Bertolucci would never have dreamt of making the kinds of films they did if it weren't for Visconti.'
    Burt Lancaster called him 'the best director I've ever worked with... an actor's dream.'
