Poet

The Resume

    (December 20, 1850-February 2, 1920)
    Born in London, United Kingdom
    Full name: Théophile-Jules-Henri Marzials
Considered to be one of the worst published poets in the English language
Was a librarian's assistant at the British Museum

Why he might be annoying:

    He was arrogant and eccentric.
he often gave impromptu (and unwanted and unrequested) performances of his works. He is quoted as saying 'Am I not the darling of the British Museum reading room?' while inside that same silent room.
He published one book of poetry in his lifetime, 'The Gallery of Pigeons and Other Poems'.
Featured in the book is the poem, 'Death--A Tragedy', which is widely acclaimed as the worst poem ever written.
The poem starts, 'Death! Plop! The Barges down the river flop!' and gets worse from there.
He became addicted to chlorodyne, a quack medicine for cholera.

Why he might not be annoying:

Other people claim that William McGonagall is the worst poet ever, in that he wrote more bad poems than Marzials.
He actually made a decent living as a songwriter. 'Twickenham Ferry' and 'Ask No More of Me, My Sweet' were both very successful on both sides of the Atlantic.
As a librarian's assistant, he had connections with quite a few authors, which gave him some legitimacy among other writers of the time.
He is still remembered today, when far more talented writers have long been forgotten.
