Why he might be annoying:

Despite what you might think from his nickname, he and his family left Arkansas for California before his first birthday.
He led the National League in errors by a shortstop in three seasons (1932-33, 1940).
His achievements in the 1940 All Star Game were overshadowed when Ted Williams hit a three-run homer in the 9th inning to win the game for the American League.
He sat out of baseball for three seasons after an argument with Dodgers manager Leo Durocher.

Why he might not be annoying:

Bill James ranked him as the second greatest shortstop in Major League history, behind Honus Wagner.
His .385 batting average in 1935 is the best by a National League shortstop in the 20th century.
He hit for the cycle twice (June 24, 1933, and July 19, 1939).
He was the first player to hit two home runs in an All Star Game (1940).
Jackie Robinson said, 'He was one of the fellows who went out of his way to be nice to me when I came in here as a rookie. Believe me, I needed it. He was a fine fellow.'
