    Born in Baltimore, Maryland
    Biochemist and molecular endocrinologist
    Best known for his discovery of G-proteins
    With Alfred G. Gilma shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine (1994)

Why he might be annoying:

    He constantly wore flamboyantly colored bow ties.
    He tended to shy away from radio and television interviews.
    He said he didn't expect to win a Nobel Prize but 'as soon as I heard the Swedish accent, I realized something was afoot.'
    He claimed to have retired because his budget was cut repeatedly.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He lived above his father's small grocery store in Baltimore.
    He served in the Navy and the Marine Corps during World War II.
    His research demonstrated the role of G-proteins in cellular communication and cancer research.
    He became a research fellow at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda in 1960, and he remained there for 25 years.
    He moved to North Carolina in 1985 as scientific director of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences at Research Triangle Park, where he retired in 1994.
    His sister-in-law, Sanne Ledermann, was one of Anne Frank's best friends and was later killed at Auschwitz in 1943.
