Why he might be annoying:

He played second fiddle to Universal Studio's other beefcake stars, such as Rock Hudson, Tony Curtis and Jeff Chandler.
To keep his homosexuality hidden, Universal arranged for him to date Piper Laurie, Mitzi Gaynor and Martha Hyer.
His three attempts at starring in a TV series were all short-lived: 'The Further Adventures of Ellery Queen' (1959), 'The Man and the Challenge' (1959-60) and 'Shannon' (1961-62)
He officially came out of the closet when he was 65 (1986).

Why he might not be annoying:

He served as a communications officer in the Navy during World War II.
He received a Golden Globe as Most Promising Male Newcomer (1954).
His attempted Hollywood comeback in the 70s was cut short by a car crash that caused a detached retina, leaving him excessively sensitive to the bright lights of movie sets.
He wrote 'Chrome' (1978), probably the first sci-fi novel to feature a homosexual love affair.
He and partner Mike Miller were together 55 years until his death.
Tony Curtis said, 'George was the kindest and most generous man I've ever known.'
