    Born in Cleveland, Ohio
    Wrote the novel 'Shaft' (1970) and six sequels
    Wrote screenplays for 'Shaft' (1971), 'The French Connection' (1971), 'High Plains Drifter' (1973), 'A Force of One' (1978), and 'Guyana Tragedy: The Story of Jim Jones' (1980)

Why he might be annoying:

    He dropped out of school in the seventh grade.
    He lied about his age to get hired as a reporter for the Cleveland News at age 15.
    He was reportedly fired from the Cleveland Plain Dealer for stealing a watch from the jewelry store where he had gone to cover a hold-up.
    He hated Isaac Hayes' 'Theme from Shaft,' which he would parody in bars, shouting 'Who dat man? Who dat Shaft?'
    He hired ghostwriters for his later Shaft novels.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for 'The French Connection.'
    Thanks to 'Shaft,' he is one of the few white people to win an NAACP Image Award.
    After the successes of 'Shaft' and 'The French Connection,' the Los Angeles Times wrote that he 'suddenly looks like a one-man resuscitator for the movie as public entertainment.'
