Why he might be annoying:

At various times, he gave his birth date as March 10 or 21, his birth year as 1880 or 1882, and his birth place as Little Rock or Pine Bluff, Arkansas.
He told 'Great Train Robbery' director Edwin S. Porter that he had been 'born in the saddle.'
During the first shot, he mounted his horse from the wrong side and got thrown by the spooked animal. (He ended up with three roles in the film anyway -- all unmounted.)
He made multiple retirements and comebacks.
He tried unsuccessfully to become a Broadway producer.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was Hollywood's first Western star.
He wrote, directed and produced his films in addition to starring in them.
He was the first producer to team Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy.
The town of Niles, California, where Essanay had its studio, holds an annual Broncho Billy Silent Film Festival.
