The stress of guard duty gave him ulcers, which may have led to his later bout with stomach cancer.
His second ex-wife allegedly had him wire-tapped through the Stasi, the East German spy machine.
His haunting portrayal in 'The Lives of Others' drew universal praise and numerous awards.
He passed away a few months after the movie won the 'Best Foreign Language Film' Academy Award.
