Football Coach

The Resume

    (March 10, 1923-August 2, 2017)
Head Coach of Miami of Ohio (1951-1955), Northwestern (1956-1963) and Notre Dame (1964-1974)
    Career record 170-58-6
    Won 2 national championships (1966, 1973)
    Coach of the year (1964)

Why he might be annoying:

His name is hard to pronounce (it's pronounced AIR-uh Par-SEEG-yen).
In his second year at Northwestern, the football team went 0-9.
He didn't show up at the press conference at which he was to be named head coach at Notre Dame.
In his second to last game, Notre Dame suffered an embarrassing 55-24 loss to USC, giving up 49 points in 17 minutes.
In 1966, top-ranked Notre Dame faced #2 Michigan State in the 'Game of the Century.' Parseghian called for four straight running plays to run out the clock, and the game ended with a final score of 10-10. He was accused of playing for a tie, and it has tainted his legacy at Notre Dame ever since.

Why he might not be annoying:

His decision to run out the clock instead of passing the ball in the 'Game of the Century' preserved Notre Dame's place atop the rankings, and they finished the 1966 season as National Champions.
He was named Head coach at Miami University after just one season as an assistant.
His record of 95-17-4, .836 winning percentage, and two national titles at Notre Dame make him the school's most successful coach since Frank Leahy.
51 of his players at Notre Dame were named All-Americans.
In his eleven years at Notre Dame, the fighting Irish finished with a Top 10 ranking nine times.
In the middle of the 1967 season, he learned that his daughter, Karan, had contracted Multiple Sclerosis.
Two of his grandchildren died from a disease called Niemann-Pick disease, and a third suffers from the condition.
He's active in fundraising to find a cure for both MS and Niemann-Pick disease to this day.
He was the first Notre Dame coach in fifty years who didn't graduate from that university.
Upon his retirement, he became the first person named an honorary Notre Dame alumnus.
He's been married to the same woman for over fifty years.
    He's left-handed.
His tenure at Notre Dame is popularly referred to as 'the Era of Ara.'
