(February 22, 1900-July 29, 1983)
Became citizen of Mexico in 1948
Wrote and directed 'Un chien andalou (1929), 'Âge d'or, L' (1930),' 'Viridania (1961),' 'The Exterminating Angel (1962),' and 'That Obscure Object of Desire (1977)'
Why he might be annoying
He had a foot fetish.
His first film, 'Un Chien Andalou,' opened with the grotesque image of a sliced eyeball (still disturbing today, no?).
He constantly attacked the church and middle class in his films.
From 'Belle Du Jour' (1967) onward, he said he was making his last film.
Six films later, he fulfilled his promise.
In his autobiography, he said he would be happy to burn all the prints of all his films.
Why he might not be annoying
Many of his films were banned in their day, and still have shock value today.
He provided inspiration for the likes of David Lynch and John Waters.
Throughout his whole life, he remained married to the same woman until he passed away.
One of his best friends was Salvador Dali, who co-wrote his films 'Âge d'or, L'' and 'Un chien andalou' and appeared in both 'Un chien andalou.'
In 1950, he won Best Director at Cannes for 'Los Olividados.'
He was voted the 14th Greatest Director of all time by Entertainment Weekly.
