The Resume

    (July 16, 622- )
    Born in Saudi Arabia
    AKA Hijri calendar
    Lunar calendar of 12 months
    354 or 355 days
    Day begins at sunset
    Friday is the sabbath
First day of week is Saturday
Began when prophet Muhammad emigrated from Mecca to Medina
Abu-Musa al-Asha'ari created the calendar in 638 (the year 17 AH)
1st of Muharram (Islamic New Year)

Why Islamic (Muslim) Calendar might be annoying:

Although the calendar started to mark the beginning of Muhammad's emigration to Medina, in actually, the emigration occurred in September and not July 16th.
The calendar loses 10 days every year (11 on leap year).
They do not use any leap or additional days to correct for the solar year.
It takes 32 1/2 years to again coincide with the solar year.
It is hard to reconcile the calendar with the Gregorian calendar, because the religion holds certain days as sacred.
Being that a new month begins when a new Moon is spotted, some Muslim countries see the new Moon a full day ahead of others and thus are out of sync.
In order to adjust Eastern Asian Muslim countries start a new month after the new moon sets.
Strictly, the calendar is done by observation of a new moon rather than calculating when a new moon occurs.
It is used strictly for religious events as it is not aligned with seasons.

Why Islamic (Muslim) Calendar might not be annoying:

It is still used by Muslims to determine Islamic holy days and festivals.
During the month of Ramadan, Muslims may not eat, drink, or participate in pleasurable activities during the daytime.
There are months when it is forbidden to fight.
The Islamic Society of North America, along with other Islamic groups, in 2007, began trying to synchronize all Muslim calendars.
