He was a terrible alcoholic.
He sometimes went on and performed, even though he was obviously drunk.
He looks like Babe Ruth.

He was good at arm wrestling.
Unlike many opera stars, he lavished praise on other singers.
In 1960 he had a heart attack before a performance, but went on and sang it anyway.
He died six months later, at age 49.
