Wrote ‘The Metropolis (1908),’ ‘King Coal (1917),’ ‘Oil! (1927),’ ‘Boston (1928),’ ‘World’s End (1940),’ ‘Dragon’s Teeth (1942)’ and ‘The Autobiography of Upton Sinclair (1962)’

Why he might be annoying:

He ran for governor twice and lost.
He was a rabid anti-capitalist.
He founded a socialist commune.
Many literary critics consider him a weak writer.
He withheld sex from his wife.
Despite sticking up for the common man, he was actually disgusted by rural people, saying they were ‘drunkards, degenerates, mental or physical defectives, semi-idiots, victims of tuberculosis and venereal disease, and now and then a petty criminal.’
‘The Jungle,’ his book dealing with the meat-packing industry, turned a lot of people into vegetarians.

Why he might not be annoying:

‘The Jungle’ inspired government reforms of the meat-packing industry.
President Teddy Roosevelt entertained him at the White House.
He won the Pulitzer Prize.
He felt his work was misunderstood.
He championed the underprivileged.
He was active in many social causes.
His progressive slogan ‘Organize! Organize! Organize!’ was used by Minnesota Senator Paul Wellstone.
