She wrote a letter to Bill Clinton asking him to meet with Fidel Castro and lift the trade embargo against Cuba.
She contemplated suicide after having an abortion (1965).
She worked as an editor for Gloria Steinem's magazine, ‘Ms.'
She is credited with coining the term, ‘womanist.'

Why she might not be annoying:

Her novels feature strong and positive portrayals of African American women.
She won the Pulitzer Prize for her novel ‘The Color Purple (1983).'
She was active in the 1960's Civil Rights movement, and has spoken out against apartheid, female genital mutilation and nuclear weapons.
As a child, her brother accidentally shot her in the eye with his bb gun, leaving her scarred and visually impaired.
She graduated Sarah Lawrence College.
