Why he might be annoying:

He married twice.
He fathered two children out of wedlock. One child with Chrissie Hynde.
He and his brother Dave are barely on speaking terms.
During the mid-1970's, the band's musicianship took a back seat to Ray's desire to record and perform concept albums.
At different times in his life, he has suffered nervous breakdowns.

Why he might not be annoying:

He is praised as a lyricist.
His awkward vocal style has become quite the thing among emo musicians.
In 1972 Ray came up with a radical idea of filming his band while performing, only to be declined by their record label.
Ten years later, his idea, the music video, became a facet of the music industry.
He was shot while chasing the thief of his girlfriend's purse in early 2004.
He never did drugs.
