Why he might be annoying:

He was so shy, his wife Donna approached Jerry Garcia about his becoming the Dead's keyboard player.
Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh described him as a cipher.
He and Donna named their son Zion.
Cocaine and heroin abuse eventually screwed up his sense of timing.

Why he might not be annoying:

His jazz-based playing fit well with the Dead's improvisational tendencies.
After leaving the Dead, he and Donna formed the Band of Gold, but he only got to play one concert with them before his death.
He died when the car he was a passenger in rear-ended a truck in Marin County, California.
