Playwright

The Resume

    (April 17, 1586-circa 1639)
Born in Ilsington, England, United Kingdom
Best-known play was 'Tis Pity She's a Whore' (ca. 1629)
Other plays include 'The Witch of Edmonton,' 'The Lover's Melancholy' 'The Broken Heart,' 'Love's Sacrifice,' 'Perkin Warbeck' and 'The Lady's Trial'

Why he might be annoying:

Little is known about his personal life.
Several of his plays are lost.
He specialized in blood-soaked revenge tragedies. (Epitomized by the 'Tis Pity...' stage direction 'Enter Giovanni with a heart upon his dagger.')
Because it centers on an incestuous affair, 'Tis Pity...' was frequently banned.

Why he might not be annoying:

Several modern critics have likened him to a 17th-century Quentin Tarantino.
Peter Greenaway's film 'The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover' was inspired by 'Tis Pity She's a Whore.'
The 'New York Times' wrote that his plays are 'somehow both restrained and outrageous, shrewd and shocking.'
