    He drew fire in the Hispanic community for his use of the term 'spic' in his event title, which forced him to change the name of his event to 'Speak Up.'
    He was born out of wedlock.
    He granted the Latin Kings gang permission to use his poem 'Waiting For God' which talked about police brutality.

    He came out when he was 16, which led to him being kicked out of his home.
    He earned his associate's degree in communications at St. John's University prior to dropping out.
    He turned his life around after he began working at a bookstore, in which he discovered his passion for writing.
    He was a victim of a random attack of violence in his Brooklyn neighborhood, which cost him the hearing in his right ear.
    He was named LGBT History Month icon in 2010 and had his poetry collection 'If Jesus Were Gay & other poems' chosen by the American Library Assocation in 2011.
