    Dramatist, civil engineer, and statesman
    During the First Spanish Republic (1867-74), served as Minister of Education, Minister of Public Works, and Finance Minister
    Appointed Senator for Life (1900)
    Wrote the plays 'The Avenger's Wife' (1875), 'Madman or Saint' (1877), 'The Stake and the Cross' (1878), 'The Great Galeoto' (1881), 'Conflict of Duties' (1882), and 'God the Fool' (1900)
    Co-recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature (1904)

Why he might be annoying:

    He did not begin his literary career until his 40s.
    'God the Fool' was described by one critic as 'an unintentional parody of Ibsen's symbolism.'
    His plays have not aged well, with the Encyclopedia of Modern Drama noting, 'They have little appeal for present-day audiences.'

Why he might not be annoying:

    He graduated first in his class from the Engineering School of Roads, Canals and Ports.
    As Finance Minister, he established the Bank of Spain.
    He was married to Ana Estrada for 59 years.
    The Nobel Prize committee credited him with having 'revived the great traditions of the Spanish drama.'
