Why he might be annoying:

Hippies loved him.
He was not a very enthusiastic campaigner.
He opposed campaign finance reform.
He ran for a presidential nomination five times, but it always eluded his grasp.
Despite being a Democrat, he endorsed Ronald Reagan's 1980 bid for president.
He backed Reagan's pointless 'Star Wars' missile defense program.
Though he spoke against the Vietnam War, he had initially supported it.

Why he might not be annoying:

He went against his party to fiercely oppose the Vietnam War.
His 1968 presidential run was supported by many antiwar activists.
His strong showings in polls were partly why Lyndon Johnson didn't seek reelection.
He wrote several books lambasting the 'decline' in American politics.
He suffered from Parkinson's disease in his last years.
He said: 'It is dangerous for a national candidate to say things that people might remember.'
