The Resume

Why he might be annoying:

He goes by Buck, rather then his birth name of John.
He was considered an offensive liability by baseball pundits.
Jim Bouton mentioned in his book 'Ball Four' that he was advised by his manager to 'zitz' Martinez, as he had no concrete suggestions at how to pitch to him.
His playing career was defined by a career altering injury, in which he broke his leg and fractured his ankle in a home plate collision with Phil Bradley (1981).
He was fired as the Blue Jays manager 53 games into his second season with the club (2002).
He guided Team USA to a second round elimination at the World Baseball Classic, despite the fact he had a superstar-laden roster at his disposal (2006).

Why he might not be annoying:

He was a member of the inaugural Royals roster (1969).
He once pitched an inning in relief, despite his natural position being a catcher.
He established himself as an everyday player upon being traded to the Blue Jays.
He was successfully able to pull off a 9-2-7-2 double play, despite the fact he did it on a broken leg and fractured ankle.
He was the first former Blue Jay player to serve as the team's manager.
He is considered an analyst who gives an honest take on baseball, without holding a bias.
