Why he might be annoying:

He was performing on local radio at age nine.
After one really big year, his career cooled off quickly.
He said about 'Jingle Bell Rock,' 'I really didn't want to cut it because it was such a bad song.'
In a mid-80s interview, he said that Bruce Springsteen and Madonna 'stink' and Michael Jackson 'can't sing.'

Why he might not be annoying:

'Fraulein' and 'My Special Angel' both hit #1 on the Billboard country chart.
Billboard named him both Male Vocalist of the Year and Most Promising Vocalist (1957).
He lost the sight in his right eye from an ulcerated cornea (1977).
He took up woodworking and opened a shop selling rocking chairs and swings in Branson, where some of his best customers were his fellow entertainers.
