Why he might be annoying:

He had a romance with his high school math teacher and moved in with her when he was 18. They had a son 5 years later.
He abused alcohol and drugs. After he received acclaim for his performance in ‘The English Patient’ he had difficulty getting work in England due to his reputation of being a drunk.
He says he hates Bollywood yet he has acted in Bollywood films.
He says it makes him physically sick to watch himself on screen.

Why he might not be annoying:

He had a difficult relationship with his immigrant Indian parents while growing up due to their conservative traditional beliefs. He left home at age 16 because of a conflict with his father over wanting to become an actor.
During his teens, he was the lead guitarist and singer in a band.
He won a scholarship to Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London where he attended with Ewan McGregor and David Thewlis.
He has been sober since moving to the US in 1998.
He has been in a relationship with Barbara Hershey since 1998.
He appeared nude in movies.
