The Resume

    (1797-October 12, 1858)
    Born in Tokyo, Japan
    Birth name was Ando Hiroshige
    Ukiyo-e (woodblock print) artist
Best known for his series 'The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido' (1833-34) and 'One Hundred Famous Views of Edo' (1856-58)

Why he might be annoying:

His first wife had to sell some of her clothes and combs to finance one of his sketching trips.
His landscapes of Naniwa (Osaka) and Omi Province were based on other paintings since he never travelled there.
He had two sons-in-law who became painters and adopted his name. (They are usually referred to Hiroshige II and Hiroshige III to distinguish them from the original and from each other.)

Why he might not be annoying:

He was incredibly prolific, producing more than 8,000 paintings and prints.
He was noted for using unusual vantage points, seasonal allusions, and saturated colors.
He was considered the last master of the ukiyo-e genre.
He influenced many Impressionist and Post-Impressionist painters, including Manet, Monet, Van Gogh, Gaugin, Cezanne, and Whistler.
His 'The Whirlpools of Awa' was so accurate a rendering that the Japanese government banned reproduction of the print during World War II, when the strait containing the whirlpools was considered strategically important.
