    Served as a White House liaison to the FBI and the Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs
    Named head of the Special Investigation Unit, known informally as the White House Plumbers (1971)
    Undersecretary of Transportation (1973)
    Pleaded guilty to conspiring to violate the civil rights of Lewis Fielding (November 30, 1973)
    Served four and a half months in jail
    Disbarred for five years (1975-80)
    Wrote ‘Integrity: Good People, Bad Choices, and Life Lessons in the White House’ (2007)

Why he might be annoying:

    He was married and divorced three times.
    He authorized an attempt to dig up damaging information about ‘Pentagon Papers’ leaker Daniel Ellsberg by breaking into of the office of Ellsberg’s psychiatrist, Lewis Fielding, and searching through Fielding’s files.
    He noted, ‘At no time did I or anyone else there question whether the operation was necessary, legal or moral.’
    His former mentor, White House aide John Ehrlichman, complained that he ‘demonstrated such doubtful personal judgment on several occasions that it has to be said he materially contributed to the demise of the Nixon Administration.’

Why he might not be annoying:

    Before going to law school, he was communications officer on the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown.
    He babysat Ehrlichman’s kids.
    He handled the details of the famed meeting between Richard Nixon and Elvis Presley (1970).
    He was let go as head of the Plumbers for refusing to authorize wiretaps without a warrant.
    He agreed to cooperate with Watergate investigators without asking for leniency in his sentencing.
    After his release from prison, he personally apologized to Fielding.
    He was also a mountaineer who organized a ‘peace climb’ of Mount Everest by climbers from the US, the USSR, and China (1990).
