    (May 4, 1852-November 15, 1934)
    Born in London, United Kingdom
Her family moved to Oxford when her father was appointed dean of Christ Church College (1856)
Met Lewis Carroll (a lecturer at Christ Church) at age four
Inspired the character Alice in 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' (1865) and 'Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There' (1871)
Subject of several well known photographs by Carroll
Her family looked down on Carroll's middle class background.
Her close childhood friendship with Carroll is highly controversial.
Many, including Vladimir Nabokov, found Carroll's photographs of her unsettling and suggestive.
The attention she received from Carroll made her younger sister Edith jealous.
She sold the manuscript of 'Alice in Wonderland' (a gift from Carroll) in 1928.
She named one of her sons 'Caryl' but denied he was named after Lewis Carroll.
There is no hard evidence that Carroll ever behaved inappropriately with her.
As an adult, she posed for another famous photographer, Julia Margaret Cameron.
Her beloved sister Edith died at age 22.
Prince Leopold, a son of Queen Victoria, may have been in love with her.
Two of her sons were killed during World War I.
She was made a Doctor of Literature by Columbia University on the centennial of Carroll's birth (1932).
