Baseball Player

The Resume

    (February 12, 1903-July 2, 1973)
    Born in Berkeley, California
Birth name was Charles James Hafey
Outfielder for the St. Louis Cardinals (1924-31) and Cincinnati Reds (1932-35,1937)
.317 batting average, 164 home runs, 833 RBIs
Selected by the Veterans Committee for the Baseball Hall of Fame (1971)

Why he might be annoying:

He got his nickname because he raised chickens in the offseason.
He performed disappointingly in the Cardinals' World Series victories, hitting .185 in 1926 and .167 in 1931.
He missed large hunks of several seasons due to chronic sinus problems.
He also missed spring training and the start of the 1931-32 seasons due to contract disputes with the Cardinals.
He played in fewer than 100 games in 6 of his 13 seasons.
He is generally considered one of the weaker Hall of Fame inductees, and a beneficiary of teammate Frankie Frisch's dominance of the Veterans Committee.

Why he might not be annoying:

He and Bernice Stigaliano were married for 50 years.
He was the first major success of Branch Rickey's farm system.
As a fielder, he was known for having a rifle arm.
He had the first hit in the first All-Star Game (1933).
He suffered vision problems after multiple beanings in the 1926 season.
His vision became so variable that he rotated between three different pairs of glasses.
John McGraw said, 'If Chick Hafey had two good eyes, he'd be the best ballplayer anybody ever saw.'
