Why he might be annoying:

He admired the Black Panthers and Fidel Castro.
Early in his first term, he set up in his Congressional office posters of alleged American atrocities in Vietnam, embellished with red paint.
He has been married three times, divorced twice.
His son Michael was convicted of a drug-related homicide (1979) and has been repeatedly denied parole due to bad behavior.
Despite his pacifist stance in Congress, he became a lobbyist whose clients included defense contractors.
The IRS put a lien on property owned by him and his wife, claiming they owed $239,000 in unpaid income tax (2009).
His frequent absenteeism was blasted by Jerry Brown, who said, 'Oakland could use a mayor. It hasn't had one since I left office.' (2010)

He joined the Marine Corps when he was 18.
He was the first member of his family to go to college.
He was a member of Richard Nixon's enemies list.
Ideological opponent Tom DeLay said, 'I have a great respect for [him], because he always did his homework, was so articulate and eloquent on this floor.'
He was an opponent of apartheid and sponsored the bill to impose sanctions on South Africa.
He said, 'Cynics don't change the world. It's people with optimism and idealism and hope. Believe you can change it and you can.'
