    He was the original lead in ‘The Avengers,’ but quit when the first season was cut short by a writers’ strike.
    He was married three times, divorced twice.
    He was jealous of and openly hostile to Michael Caine during the filming of ‘Get Carter.’
    He went bankrupt, owing £35,000 in back taxes (1980).
    He died of a gastrointestinal hemorrhage caused by years of heavy drinking.

    At Culford School, he captained the cricket and rugby teams.
    He was twice nominated for BAFTA Awards: as Most Promising Newcomer to Films (1962) and as Best Supporting Actor (for ‘Get Carter’).
