Why she might be annoying:

She was a smoker, although she eventually quit.
Ovarian cancer took her life.
Her real last name was Nigro.
She said one of the biggest joys of her youth was singing with harmony groups along streets.
She said street singing is where her spiritual, holistic feelings derived from.
She enjoyed listening to protest music throughout her high school years.
She said the women's and peace movements made her feel 'at home.'
During her second ever performance, the audience was offended by her costume of one gossamer angel wing and two black back up singers.

Why she might not be annoying:

She ranked #52 on VH1's Top 100 Women of Rock 'n Roll.
Her music has been described as a building block for certain artists preferring to crosslink R&B, jazz, pop, emotions and poetry.
She didn't care for being stereotyped into certain music categories, saying she expresses what she feels and if that differs from others expressive abilities, big deal.
Both of her Italian-Jewish parents influenced her music and thinking at an early age.
A lot of her music is used by the Canadian Ballet.
She attended Manhattan's Music and Art school.
She continued to perform while pregnant, even during her third trimester.
During her second performance (that many found distasteful), a music agent gave up his job to become her manager and eventually signed her with major record labels.
