Blues'
Known as 'the Singing Brakeman' and 'the Father of Country Music'

He dropped out of school at 14 to work for the railroads.
Early in his career, he worked in blackface in minstrel shows.
He only started recording solo when his backing band quit following a dispute over billing.
He yodelled in a lot of songs.

He sold over 12 million records during the depths of the Depression.
He toured the Midwest with Will Rogers in a fundraiser for the Red Cross.
He died of tuberculosis just two days after his last recording session.
He was one of the first group of inductees into both the Country Music Hall of Fame and (as an early influence) the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
He was the first white performer to receive the W. C. Handy Award for contributions to the blues (1984).
