Football Player

The Resume

    (June 11, 1930-December 14, 1983)
    Born in Fort Wayne, Indiana
Drafted fifth overall by the Philadelphia Eagles in the 1952 NFL Draft
Played for the Calgary Stampeders (1952–54) and the Edmonton Eskimos (1954–64)
Eddie James Memorial Trophy winner (1957, 1958, 1959)

Why he might be annoying:

Many people remember him as a result of an intent to injure play by Oklahoma A & M University player Wilbanks Smith that was racially motivated.
Some college football pundits felt the hit and subsequent injury derailed his chances of winning the Heisman Trophy.
Despite setting numerous college football records, his name is often ignored in the conversations.
He initially agreed to go to Michigan State, but withdrew his scholarship when he was unhappy with the direction of the school's football program.
He was traded to Edmonton in a move that would wind up becoming one of the more lopsided trades in CFL history.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was the first member of the football team at Drake University to have his number retired.
He was the first player in football history to wear the modern day facemask.
He was one of the first African-American stars to play in the CFL.
He worked as a teacher during the off-seasons.
He held a Grey Cup record (since broken) for rushing yards in a single game.
He has a school and a park posthumously named in his honor in Edmonton.
