    He sang the song 'Old Black Joe' in his first school recital.
    Although his performances were almost always well reviewed, he more than once was upstaged by a co-star (for instance by Beverly Sills in her April 7, 1975 Rossini debut).

    He started out performing at local events around the San Juan area.
    He was the first-ever Puerto Rican to win the Met Opera National Council Auditions (on March 29, 1963).
    He performed opposite Leontyne Price for the opening of the new Metropolitan Opera at Lincoln Center (September 16, 1966).
    He sang in the world-premiere recording of the complete score for 'South Pacific' with Paige O'Hara.
    He is visible in the background of Leontyne Price's AiA profile picture.
    He appeared in Zeffirelli's 2002 film 'Callas Forever.'
    He sang at the inauguration of the Luis A. Ferre Performing Arts Center in San Juan (where he later gave his final performance in 2003).
    His two daughters became award-winning performance artists in their own right and even performed at his Kennedy Center Honors ceremony.
