Religious Figure
    (February 25, 1920-September 3, 2012)
Cult leader (The Moonies) whose members married each other in huge mass wedding ceremonies
    Claimed to be God
    Wrote 'The Divine Principle' (1952)
    Owned the Washington Times newspaper
He assigned marriage partners to his members.
Members of his church lived in a commune where they were given a bed, meals and usually, a spouse.
Members were expected to attend all lectures, work non-stop and be available for any fund raising activity.
Married couples were separated from their children.
Before any marriage, the members were to confess all sexual sins to reverend Moon and beg for forgiveness.
    He performed mass marriage ceremonies (124 couples-July 24, 1963; 430 couples-February 25, 1968; 777 couples-January 2, 1970; 1800 couples-February 8, 1975) all those were in Korea.
He also performed many other mass weddings in Korea, Germany, England and New York City.
His biggest mass wedding out of Korea was 2,200 couples in Madison Square Garden in New York City (May 18, 1982).
He then topped his biggest mass wedding, marrying 6,000 couples in Korea (October 14, 1982).
He charged a fee when they got married.
He considered marriage the most important thing a person can do.
    He was divorced three times.
He was in Hung Nam Prison (1950).
He was in prison in Seoul (1955).
He was convicted of tax fraud in the United States (May 18, 1982).
He was sentenced to 18 months in prison for fraud (May 16, 1982).
He said: 'God is now throwing Christianity away and is now establishing a new religion, and this new religion is the Unification Church.'
He claimed: 'All the Christians in the world are destined to be absorbed by our movement.'
He warned: 'He [God] is living in me and I am the incarnation of Himself. . . . The whole world is in my hand, and I will conquer and subjugate the world.'
The New York Times reported: 'While church members accept Moon's theology as revealed truth, non-members generally find it a mind-boggling mixture of Pentecostal Christianity, Eastern mysticism, anti-Communism, pop psychology, and metaphysics.'
He took care of all the needs (food, clothing, shelter and sexual partner) of his members (but no dental plan that we were aware of).
