He had deep psychological problems, and had to be institutionalized.
His paintings evoke horror, anguish and death.
'The Scream' has overshadowed all his other work.
It has been over-parodied and over-merchandized.

Why he might not be annoying:

He is considered the greatest artist to come out of Norway.
His beloved sister died of tuberculosis when he was a child.
The Nazis classified his art as 'degenerate' and banned it from German museums.
He was friends with the great playwright Henrik Ibsen, and designed many sets for his plays.
'The Scream' was stolen from an Oslo museum by armed robbers (August 22, 2004).
It was recovered two years later (August 2006).
