    It has some of the harshest winter conditions, due to the frequency of lake effect snow, as a result of its proximity to both Lake Erie and Lake Ontario.
    The origins of its name have been hard to determine, as there were various theories floating around.
    It is overshadowed by both Albany and Syracuse within New York state.
    It experienced a significant population loss during the mid-20th century, following the decline of the industrial sector.
    It was nicknamed 'Sin City,' as a result of the organized crime and political corruption that took place during the 1950's.
    It is considered one of the poorest cities within the state of New York.

Why Utica, New York might not be annoying:

    It was initially founded as a river settlement by the Mohawk people.
    It was a hub center for the textile industry during the early part of the 20th century.
    It offers picturesque scenery of the Adirondack Mountains.
    It was considered an integral stop along the Underground Railroad network.
    Its low cost of living made it an attractable destination for refugees and immigrants during the turn of the century.
