    It was the site of the Battle of Gainesville (August 17, 1864).
    It has a big problem with suburban sprawl.
    It also has issues with the homeless.
    Gainesville Green defines its marijuana culture.
    Following the Civil War and into the 1920s, it had a reputation of being a violent racist city.
    The Ku Klux Klan had some activity here in the 1920s.
    The university's stadium, Ben Hill Griffin Stadium is nicknamed 'The Swamp.'
    It gained media attention when pastor Terry Jones launched Islamophobia campaigns to burn Korans, attack Islam and oppose building mosques (2010 and 2011).

    It hosts annual events such as The Fest, The Spring Arts Festival, Downtown Festival and Art Show and the Hoggetowne Medieval Faire.
    It preserved some of its historic buildings and is surrounded by beautiful natural landscapes.
    It contains dozens of museums, parks and lakes.
    It is on the halfway point of highway I-75 between Atlanta, Georgia and Miami.
    It won the 'Gold Well City' award from the Wellness Councils of America to be called the 'Healthiest Community in America' (April 2003).
    Blender magazine selected it as the 'Best Place to Start a Band in the United States' (2008).
