    During the 'Spanish Fury,' soldiers looting the city killed 6,000 people (November 4-6, 1576).
    From the mid-17th century to 1800, the population dropped in half when the Scheldt River was closed to navigation, destroying the city's trade.
    During World War II, it was hit by thousands of V-1 and V-2 missiles as the Germans tried to destroy the city's port.
    The southern part of the city is considered a yuppie stronghold.

    It was the first city to host the World Gymnastics Championships (1903).
    Its zoo was named the 'most romantic and best preserved' 19th century zoo (2007).
    It is one of the major European centers for Hasidic Judaism.
    Its port is the second busiest in Europe.
